15 Unusual (Yet Practical) Reasons To Hoard Salt In Your Survival Stockpile

When most people think of salt they immediately think about cooking and baking, right?

Believe it or not though, salt has several surprising uses in a "survival scenario", or when normal supplies are not available.

Here are 15 unusual (yet practical) uses for the salt you should be storing in your survival supplies!

  1. To provide relief for a bee sting immediately moisten the area with water and cover it with salt

  2. Rid your hands of fish smell by rubbing them with a lemon wedge dipped in salt; then rinse with water

  3. Quickly eliminate those annoying pinfeathers from a plucked chicken by rubbing the skin with salt

  4. Reduce the amount of time it takes to bring hot water to a boil by adding a pinch of salt.  This is particularly useful at higher elevation

  5. Remove rust by making a paste out of 2 tablespoons lemon juice and 6 tablespoons of salt, and apply to rust with cloth. Rub thoroughly, rinse, and dry

  6. Improve the flavor of coffee by adding a small pinch of salt to the hot water used for brewing. This will reduce the coffee's bitter edge

  7. You can use salt to detect a rotten egg by dissolving 2 teaspoons of salt in a cup of water and carefully place the egg in the water. A good egg should sink, so if it floats then toss it!

  8. Use salt to clean a  greasy pan by sprinkling it on the greasy surface, and rubbing with a paper towel

  9. Calm the flames and reduce smoke in a blazing BBQ (without cooling the coals) by sprinkling salt into the flames

  10. Dissolve 1 tsp salt in a glass warm water and rinse/gargle as an effective treatment for sore throat, mouth sores, and bad breath

  11. Sprinkle salt into your dog's fur and then comb the salt out (along with dirt, fleas, etc) to "dry clean" your furry friend

  12. Add salt to cold water and ice in your cooler to rapidly chill your drinks

  13. Keep milk fresh slightly longer by adding a pinch of salt to it

  14. Scale fish more easily by soaking the fish in salty water beforehand

  15. Kill poison ivy by mixing approximately 3 pounds of salt into a gallon of warm soapy water then spray the mixture generously to cover the entire plant

Of course, these 15 reasons you should be stockpiling salt with your survival preps are just a very small fraction of the uses that salt can provide for you in a "pinch" ;)
