Survival Tip: The Paracord Tow Strap

If you’re stuck without a tow strap, you can use paracord to temporarily bail a vehicle out.

Paracord, also known as 550 cord, is called that because it can carry 550 pounds of pull on a single line.

Here's what to do:

  • Calculate the weight of the vehicle you are trying to tow, then multiply by two.

(Example: a 4000 pound car x 2 = 8000 pounds.)

  • To make a ten foot tow line, you will need to use 15 strands of paracord (15 x 550 pounds = 8250 pounds). Ten feet x 15 strands is 150 feet of paracord, in one continuous length, wrapped around the tow points of the vehicles.

It’s easily able to do the job for short distances!
